Drive. Repeat.
June 25th – 26th, 2017
One of Tarrin’s favorite things to do is sit in a vehicle…. for hours at a time. He LOVED the 26 hour (one way) road trip to Tennessee back in December of 2015. He just love, love, loves sitting. How else would you explain his perfectly planned excuse to turn right around and go back to Lake Tahoe, California! We enjoyed a great Shindig. For most of us the worst part was the 9 hour road trip to get there. But not Tarrin. He couldn’t wait to do it again! So California is not so thrilled about gun-toting Utahans. You can have them… but there’s a bunch of rules with them. So when we got to Truckee to our awesome cabin, Tarrin, trying to be a good boy, put his gun in the dresser drawer of his room. Out of sight – out of mind. Like… really out of mind.
It wasn’t until Sunday night that he realized he never got his gun back out of said drawer. So 10 o’clock on Sunday night we headed out to meet Tarrin in Salt Lake and then back to Truckee we go. There were many unanswered questions. Did the housekeeper find the gun and turn it in to police? Or worse, give it to a drug dealer? Would there be another family in the cabin (imagine that awkward conversation)? Assuming neither of those two things were issues…. would we be able to get in the cabin? Did they change the garage code? Change the code to the inside door? If so, would there be a window open to climb through? So many questions. The biggest question was whether Tarrin was going to have a felony record. All very valid concerns and questions.
You can bet your bottom dollar there were many prayers being said. The three of us said one before we embarked on our journey. The closer we got… the more anxious we got. It was about 8AM and the moment of truth had finally arrived as we pulled into the driveway. I was too nervous to go up to the garage with him. But Tarrin went right up and entered the code and and voila! the garage door opened! One obstacle out of the way. One more to go. There was a code on the door going from the garage to the house. Code entered. Several times. Didn’t work. Our hearts sank! Well… time to check all the doors and windows. First stop…. front door. WHAT!? It’s unlocked!!!!!! Tarrin turns to us and gave an excited/shocked look and then disappeared into the house and returned back to the porch within 20 seconds with gun in hand! Mission accomplished people! And no handcuffs were involved! Talk about a sigh of relief! There was rejoicing in that car let me tell ya’! We said another prayer of gratitude and then it was time to…. drive again…. for 9 hours. We celebrated in Reno with a stop at Black Bear Diner.
Moral of the story? Don’t get tricked into being the designated keep-the-driver-awake person during an 18+ hour road trip. You don’t get to sleep.
